Ferman Bass, Advocate for Elderly, Indigent
Ferman Ray Bass Sr., a lifelong resident of Osceola County, died Saturday after a long bout with cancer. Mr. Bass was 72 and lived at 3260 Osceola Road, St. Cloud. Mr. Bass retired in early 1981 after serving as Osceola County's director of welfare for 16 years. According to Joe Miranti, the current welfare director, Bass was a hard act to follow. ''He was really a truly fine person, both personally and professionally,'' said Miranti. ''He was well respected by everybody, always going way beyond his job description to help people. ''Folks knew him by sight. He'd always take the time to stop and talk, and to listen,'' said Miranti. A well-known advocate for the elderly and the indigent, Mr. Bass began his career in county administration as the head of Geriatrics Manor, the old county nursing home on the St. Cloud canal. Looking out for the elderly, the homeless and the down-and-out came easily to Bass, who had a reputation as a compassionate man. ''He was the Rock of Gibraltar whenever family, friends or neighbors needed support,'' said Kathy Jo Roberson of Kissimmee, Mr. Bass's oldest daughter. ''He was the greatest father to his three children, but he was a father to so many,'' said Mr. Bass's daughter, Marcia M. Dooley. When Dooley's husband died a few years ago, Mr. Bass, their ''Pop,'' became a father to her three children. Mr. Bass's wife of 51 years, Verna C. Warden, was a fellow native Osceolan. ''He was my whole life,'' said Verna. Ferman Bass was the last survivor of Osceola County pioneers John Edward and Mae Belle Barber Bass' six children. Mr. Bass was a country boy, growing up in the days when it was a way of life in Osceola County. Mr. Bass was a cattleman, a cowpoke back in the days of the three-day cattle drives. He also owned grove land. A favorite cause of Mr. Bass's was the Kissimmee Park Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Bass organized an annual fund-raiser for the fire department on his land, eventually donating his land to the department. ''He wasn't a club joiner. He was a quiet man in many ways, preferring to work behind the scenes,'' said Roberson. ''He was my greatest friend,'' Roberson said. He was a member of First Christian Church, St. Cloud. In addition to his wife and two daughters, Bass is survived by his son, Ferman A. ''Butch'' Jr., St. Cloud; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Grissom Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Leroy J. Boldon, retired from First Christian Church, St. Cloud, officiating. Burial to follow in Finney Point Cemetery, St. Cloud. Grissom Funeral Home, 803 W. Emmett Street, Kissimmee, in charge of arrangements.
