Bass
BASS ? The subject of this sketch (brother John L. Bass) was born more than threescore years and ten ago. He grew up in his father?s large family of twelve children, sharing the joys and sorrows of life with them, occasionally attending the old field schools in the community in which he lived.
He gave his heart to God when but a youth, and became a consistent member of Rockyhock Baptist Church, in the fellowship of which he remained true till death.
Soon after reaching maturity he married Miss Pennie the daughter of brother Elijah Harrell, who has been a helpmate to him indeed through life?s journey.
Brother Bass was a model Christian. He let nothing come between him and his church. It was a joy to be with him around his fireside and hear him talk of things heavenly. Giving to help extend his Master?s kingdom in the earth seemed to be a pleasure His home was ever open for the entertainment of his pastor and any other true minister who might pass that way. Many eyes were wet with tears when he led in public prayer in the neighborhood prayer meeting. He has said many encouraging words to the writer, when a poor preacher boy, struggling to become a minister of the gospel. Oh! the vacancy in his home, in the church of which he was a member, and in the community in which he lived. The old world seems lonely without him. The large concourse of people which followed him to the grave testified to the esteem in which he was held by all who knew him.
May the God of all grace comfort the sorrow stricken wife and children which are left behind to mourn their loss; but their loss is his eternal gain. G.W. White
