Mrs. Burkett Bass Killed By Lightning
Young Matron of Irdell Meets Death But Babe In Her Lap Escapes Injury

Statesville, Sept. 12 ? Mrs. Burkett Bass was killed by lightning at her home on the Taylorsville road, three miles from Statesville, yesterday afternoon during an electrical storm. Mrs. Bass?s infant daughters, four months old, lying in its mother?s lap at the time, was not injured. Mr. and Mrs. Bass and little child and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wilson were seated in the room, Mrs. Bass being seated against the wall a few feet from the open fireplace. The bolt appears to have struck through the roof and passin through Mrs. Bass?s body. The right shoe was split and torn from her foot and a hole was knocked in the toe of the left foot.
The child fell from its mother?s lap as Mrs. Bass fell backward.
Mr. Bass was knocked unconscious for a time, but soon regained consciousness. Mr. Wilson was knocked down, but was not rendered unconscious. Mrs. Wilson felt the shock but suffered no injuries. Mrs. Bass was 17 years of age. She was a daughter of N.W. Thompson.
