    • Description: In the name of God amen I John Bass Sr of the county of Chesterfield and state of Virginia do hereby make and ordain this my last will and testament in the manner and form following to wit.



      Item 1. I give and devise to my daughter Julia A Flournoy a Negro girl named Serifanna and with all her increase to her the said Julia Ann Flournoy & the heirs only of her body forever and at the division of my estate hereafter directed she is not to be held to account for said girl or her increase. I also give to my said daughter 1 bed & stead & furniture 1 cradle and furniture 1 chest 1 riding horse 1 cow & calf & 6 sheep to her the said Julia Ann and the heirs only of her body all of which she has received in allowance as is requested to amount for in the division of my estate except for the girl Serianna and her increase.

      Item 2. It is my will and desire that before the division of my estate here afterafter dictated later take place, enough of my personal estate be sold on a .... of 12 months to bring the sum of $1000 that being the amount I have given or am to pay as security for my son John H Bass which said $1000 after paying out of it whatever expenses I have or may have to pay on account of my said daughter staying at the insane asylum at Staunton. I devise and bequeath unto Walthall C Goode his heirs executors and administrators and assigns in trust nevertheless for the sole and exclusive use and benefit of my daughter Julia Ann Flournoy the wife of James F Flournoy during her life which Trust I repose in him as my particular friend on account of my said daughter having been at times deranged which said amount is to remain w/ him the said Trustee's hands for the purpose above stated and to be disposed of as hereinafter directed as will be the other property which will be given to him the said Trustee for the benefit of my said daughter and her children free from the control of her present or any future husband she may have.

      Item 3. I give my son John H Bass my family Bible and all the other books I have bought for him and he is not to be held to the amount for them at the division of my estate.

      Item 4. My will and desire is that all the rest and residue of my estate both real and personal after the payment of my just debts be divided into 2 equal parts 1 of which I give devise and bequeath unto my friend Walthall C Goode his heirs executors administrators or assigns forever in trust nevertheless for the sole and exclusive use and benefit of my daughter Julia A Flournoy...(omitted here are repeat statements from Item 2) - the said Julia A Flournoy to have possession and use of such of the said of the property as she may think proper and as far as may be consistent with the preservation thereof. My negro girl named Irena to be valued and my said Trustee to take her as a part of the $1000 above named to be held by him as the other property named and disposed of in the same way and for the same purpose plus all the articles named in the 1st Item is to be counted as a part of the $1000 except the girl Serifanna and her children. And in future trust and confidence that the said Trustee shall hold and manage the same property after the death of the said Julia A Flournoy for the use and benefit of her children, no right however shall rest in such children to the said property until they shall respectfully arrive at the age of 21 years or marry or the happening of either of which event they shall respectfully be entitled to receive equal portions of the same and the said Trustee may at any time during the life of the said Julia Ann Flournoy by and with her consent given in writing give off to her children as they shall become of age or marry their equal distributable shares of said property.

      The other part thereof I devise and bequeath to my Grand Children the children of my son John H Bass now in living or that may hereafter be born to him in lawful wedlock with power to my said son whom I hereby appoint Trustee for that purpose to keep possession of said property and remain the same if he shall desire it advisable to change his residence and apply the ? and profits thereof Only to the support maintenance and education of his children and himself without accountability for any surplus of said rents, issues, and profits beyond such support education and maintenance of his said children until his youngest child arrive at the age of 21 years. If my said son shall so long live and sooner if my said son shall soon die, my will and desire is that the said property be divided equally among my said Grandchildren living at the time of each division and the ? if any as may have married and desire leaving some at the time of each division ....taking the share their respective parents would have taken but my will and desire is that if each division take place in the lifetime of my son, he be allowed to retain enough of the said property to enable him to support out of the profits thereof, he being entitled only to the ...and profits of this property so retained during his natural life, and at his death the property so retained to be divided as heretofore directed among my said Grandchildren and their offspring if any.

      My will and desire is that my said son shall heretofore desire it advisable to change his residence, he shall have the power to sell the land herein devised to his children and remove the proceeds of sale with him and in other lands to be held and disposed of in like manner as herein before directed in relation to the lands herein devised to my Grandchildren.

      Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my son John H Bass and my friend Walthall C Goode whole and sole Executors to this my last Will and testament hereby revoking all forms wills made by me And do for the full confidence reposed in them request the Court to permit them to qualify without requiring of them any security. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of May 1846.

      NB Interlines on the first page in the following words, during his life (& I will be) and on the second page in the words girl Serifanna and her children which was done before the testator signed his name and at his request.

      A Codicil to this my last Will and testament.
      I have devised in Item since on the first page of my Will hereto annulled that enough of my personal estate be sold before a division is made to pay to my daughter Julia Ann Flournoy the sum of $1000. My will is that the personal estate be not sold but that the tract of land I own in the County of Goochland be sold by my executors either publicly or privately as to them may see best on a credit 1 and 2 years and the proceeds arising from the sale of the tract of land be applied to the payments of the said debt of $1000 to my daughter Julia Ann Flournoy. Given under our hand and seal this 1st day of Oct 1846. John Bass Sr (seal)
