Joseph A. Bass
Chesapeake - Joseph Alwood Bass, 81, of the 3400 block of Galberry Road, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013 in his residence. A native of Portsmouth, he was a birthright member of the Nansemond Indian Tribe and was a retired carman for Norfolk-Southern Railroad after 43 years. He was a member of Indiana United Methodist Church, past master of Driver Masonic Lodge, and a member of Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies and Khedive Shrine Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chief Earl L. and Lucille E. Bass. Survivors include his wife, Iris Lucile Bass; a daughter, Debra J. Blessing of Chesapeake; a son, Chief Barry W. Bass and wife Betty of Chesapeake; four sisters, Peggy, Clara, Carrie and Sandra; a brother, Bobby; three grandchildren, Tracie, Wendi and Jesse; five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Malia, Damon, Jordon, and Autumn. A funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel by the Revs. Larry Renfrow and Kirk Culpepper.
