Cornelia Bass Broadfoot
Cornelia Bass Broadfoot passed away Thursday, March 31st, just a week shy of her 92nd birthday. Born Cornelia Elizabeth to Henry and Viola (Radford) Bass in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, she told wonderful stories about her youth with her sisters Nell and Jitney and her younger brother Henry who presently resides with his wife Sue in Belmont, Massachusetts. She was a graduate of Bethel Women's Junior College and attended UNC-Chapel Hill where she met the love of her life Winston Broadfoot. They and their three children, Tom and twins Bonnie and Covington, lived in Houston, Texas, Hillsborough and Chapel Hill as well as Wilmington.
An accomplished and inventive cook, Cornelia (Granny) fed the multitudes as a devoted member of the Episcopal Church Women. A lifetime member of the Society of Colonial Dames, she served for many years as advisor to Chi Omega sorority in Chapel Hill. She was a Life Master bridge player and an early and generous supporter of an adult learning program offered by UNC-Chapel Hill Humanities Department. In the Wilmington area she created the Winston Broadfoot Nature Preserve through a generous donation of land to UNC-Wilmington.
Although she took great pleasure in pinching a penny, she was known for her gracious hospitality, warmth, humor and incredible generosity. She was an avid reader, relished Pavarotti, and very much enjoyed her travels to Italy and Egypt. She will be sorely missed by so many including her children: son Tom and his wife Jan, and their children John and his wife Marla, Charlie, and Amy and her husband Chris Neal; son Covington; and daughter Bonnie Lewis and her sons Matt and Ben. She delighted in her great granddaughters, Marilyn, Viola and Josilyn who enjoyed playing with her collection of unicorns. In addition to her brother she also leaves many nieces and nephews and a broad array of friends to whom she meant so much.
Family and friends are invited to a Granny Gathering on Saturday evening, April 9th from 5pm until at Buena Vista. We will celebrate the life of a grand and formidable lady who kept her flag waving, enjoyed her Jack straight and her tales colorful. A graveside service will be held Sunday afternoon at 4pm at Oakdale Cemetery.
Donations may be made in her memory to her favorite charities: the Salvation Army; Planned Parenthood; or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
