Moultrie — Colquitt County Sheriff's Department Captain John E. Bass, 59, of Moultrie, died Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, November 17, at Cobb Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Julian Griner officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Sinai Cemetery. The Colquitt County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard will serve as casketbearers. All area law enforcement personnel will serve as honorary casketbearers.
Born May 11, 1954, in Moultrie, he was the son of the late Julius Clinton Bass Sr. and Grace Taylor Bass. He began his 38-year career in law enforcement with the Moultrie Police Department in 1975, and then became a Colquitt County Deputy Sheriff, with 32 years of service.
"He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed helping people," his family remembered. "He loved muscle cars, restoring antique tractors and was an animal lover."
"He was an awesome husband and father and was always there for his family," his family also said.
He was a member of Moultrie Masonic Lodge # 381 and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Alice Musick Bass of Moultrie; one son, Brian Bass of Moultrie; one sister, Beverly Carter and husband Al of Moultrie; one brother, Julius C. "Sonny" Bass and wife Marilyn of Warwick, Georgia; one niece, Dawn Carter of Moultrie; one nephew, Jonathan Bass and wife Katie of Cairo, Georgia; two great-nephews, Sebastian and Jordan; and a great-niece, Isabella.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, November 16, at Cobb Funeral Chapel.
