Alice Jane Bass Royal
SALEMBURG ? Mrs. Alice Jane Bass Royal, 90, of Salemburg, North Carolina, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, at Southwood Rehabilitation Center, while holding hands with her husband of seventy-two years. Alice was born in Sampson County, North Carolina, on Nov. 25, 1933, to the late Lonnie D. and Tempie J Bass.
She was preceded in death by two unnamed baby girls and eleven brothers and sisters: the Rev. Bernice G. Bass, Newberry Bass, Crafton D. Bass, Johnson Bass, Howard Bass, Shelton Bass, Lonnie Bass, James Milton Bass, Crotia Blanchard, Irma Peterson, and Alease Compton.
Alice grew up working on her family's farm in Sampson County. After marriage to Joseph Royal, she co-ran Royal Brothers IGA grocery store in Salemburg, before later becoming Head Postal Clerk at the Salemburg Post Office for 20 years. She prided herself on her strong work ethic and practicality, but her greatest pride ? and her greatest joy ? was her family. All her years, Mrs. Royal loved and cared for her family, her husband, and her children and grandchildren. At every chance she had, she would share their happiness and successes with the world. And she would always be right there with them, to hold and love them, through the pitfalls and tribulations we all at times faced.
Alice Jane is survived by her husband of seventy-two years, Joseph Gardner Royal of Salemburg; one brother Carl G. Bass of Clinton; three children: Denise Lane of Salemburg; Joseph Royal and wife Sarah of Salemburg; and Ramby Royal and wife Cathy of Stem, North Carolina; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, and grandma; and she was cherished, dearly, by all who knew her.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, Dec. 21, at Salemburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Drew Bolin and Charles Royal officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 11 to 11:50 a.m. on Thursday at the church prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Honeycutt, Joseph Paul Honeycutt, Chris Gagnon, Ramby Jonathan Royal, Stephen Kelbaugh, Kevin Bass and honorary pallbearers will by Bryan Bass and Chris Bass.
