Hubert Allison “Sam” Bass
Born December 31, 1929 in Waterloo, Arkansas, Hubert Allison Bass was raised by his loving parents Egbert Garland and Eula Ramsay Bass. At a young age Hubert and his family moved to Henderson, Texas where he attended and graduated from Henderson High School in 1948. Afterward he moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, but after the Korean began in 1950 he joined the U.S. Air Force and went through the pilot training program where he developed a lifelong love of aviation and flying. While stationed in Kentucky he met his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Ann Donovan. After getting married in 1955 Hubert moved his family to Beaumont, Texas, where he finished his Bachelor's degree at Lamar University and began a teaching career at Forest Park High School.
Shortly after earning his Master's degree from Stephen F. Austin University in 1965 he accepted the position of Assistant Dean of Men at Sam Houston State University, where he embarked on a 30 year career as a college administrator. Hubert, or "Sam" as he was called by all of his friends, would eventually become the Director of Admissions at Sam Houston, a position he held until 1992 when he retired. During his tenure at Sam Houston State he literally admitted thousands of students from around the world and made a positive impact on their lives and the lives of countless others. Hubert enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than anything, and made a huge impact on all of their lives. Hubert was also a long standing and very active member of the First United Methodist Church of Huntsville and participated in the men's weekly bible study group.On January 29, 2015 Hubert was called to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior. He is preceded in death by his parents Egbert Garland Bass and Eula Ramsay Bass. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Ann Donovan Bass; daughter Kathy Miller and child Amy Stoermer and husband Gerald; son Keith Bass and wife Grace with children Allison Bass and Brent Bass; son Kyle Bass with children Colt Bass, Cali Bass, Casey Bass and Carly Bass; and three great- grandchildren, Sydney Stoermer, Sam Stoermer and Chase Stoermer. He is also survived by three siblings Harroll Bass, Regenta Jenkins and Eula Mae Lyle, and a special cousin, Jack Ramsay.The family will receive guests at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday, February 8, 2015 from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. and a memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Monday, February 9th at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the H.A. Sam Bass Memorial Scholarship Fund at Sam Houston State University's Office of University Advancement, P.O.
