Dr. William Bass Of Lowell Is Dead
Physician Succumbs to Attack of Pneumonia
Was War Surgeon and Prominent in Professional Societies
LOWELL, Feb. 28 ? Dr. William Bass died last night at his home, 42 Tyler st. of pneumonia.
Dr. Bass was a member of Ancient York Lodge, I.O.O.F. He devoted about all his life to his profession. In 1873 he served one term in the Common Council. His daughter, Mrs. L.B. Leonard, lives in California and his brother and sister in Chicago.
He was born in Williamstown, Vt., June 22, 1832, and received his degree of MD in 1856. He then came to Lowell and was associated for two years with the late Dr. Walter Burnham. In 1858 he went West and remained two years. He was practicing as a physician and surgeon in Lowell in 1864 when he was appointed assistant surgeon of the 6th Massachusetts Regiment for duty in Virginia.
After the Civil war he resumed practice in Lowell, and so continued up to his last illness. Though a general practitioner, he devoted considerable of his time to surgery. For many years his office was the corner of Middlesex and Canal sts.
He was president of the Middlesex North Medical Society in 1884 and 1885. He served as a member of the staffs of Lowell Corporation and St. John?s Hospitals and had been for many years physician for the Old Ladies? Home.
Miss Elizabeth Gates Hunt and Dr. Bass were married Oct. 5, 1956. A daughter was born to them. Mrs. Bass died three years ago.
In 1906, on the 50th anniversary of his beginning the practice of medicine, he was tendered a reception by physicians and surgeons of Lowell.
Dr. Bass had been a member of the First Baptist Church for half a century. He was well known in Lowell and was highly esteemed.
