48B314.6. James Russell Bassett, son of John William Bassett
James Russell Bassett, son of John William and Martha Ann (Corley) Bassett, was born in 1844/5 in Georgia. He married (1) Martha "Mattie" Virginia Hamlin. She was born in 1846. He married (2) Sarah Lenora Watson. They are both buried in Ebenezer Church Cemetery in Bibb County, Georgia.
J.R. Bassett was a private in Company G, 62nd Regiment Georgia Volunteer Cavalry; later shows as J.R. Bassett, private, Company G, 8th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Cavalry. He enlisted 1 Jan 1864 at Busbyville by Capt. P. Gray for a period of 3 years.
He was captured near Greenville, North Carolina on 18 Feb 1865 and was sent to Military Prison at Camp Hamilton in Virginia. He was released 23 Jun 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland. His POW record shows he had fair complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes and was 5'5 1/4" tall. His pension application states that he was supported by his brother and children and lived in Bibb County, Georgia at the time he applied and owned nothing.
