    Notes
    • In the 1851 census we have found William living in Coton Hall, Coton Hamlet, Kingsbury, the home of Edward Langley (a builder) and his relationship to the head of the house is said to be 'apprentice'
There is a grave in Nether Whitacre churchyard - 'Edward Langley died 1858 aged 48 years and his wife Ann who died in 1876 aged 61 years'. Next to that grave is one for their two daughters who died within a few weeks of each other in Dec/Jan 1861/2. They are Jane aged 9 (born in 1852) and Elizabeth, 13 (b. 1838) (called Betsy on the 1841 census). So poor Ann Langley lost her husband and two of her children in the space of three year. Only Myra (1850) remained with Ann. Ann died when Myra was 16.

In 1861 he was living with Maria in Upper Sutton St. Lozells and they had a three month old daughter Fanny. Maria was born in Minworth (1838); William states his birthplace as Whitacre.

In 1881 the growing family have moved to 63 Out Door Beer H, Mansfield Road, Six Ways Aston (still there in 2008), and William is working as a publican and bricklayer and his son William (a carpenter) is now living with them also. The second son, Thomas, is a silversmith. Also in the household is Ellen Wood, aged 14, whose occupation is listed as 'general servant'. The neighbours are, on one side a baker's shop and on the other side is a 'huester's shop' (huckster's?) occupied by a 'general dealer'. Next door to that lives a Mr. Wilder, a 'small master jewler'. His 16 year-old son, George Wilder, is listed as a 'jewler'

In January 2008 No. 63 Mansfield Road is situated in a row of approx 20 - 25 houses. The bricks look new (have probably been faced) but the adjoining houses have older looking bricks and original sash windows.No. 63 is next to an archway leading to a car park and there are houses around the square. This must have been Ct.7 as detailed as being in the neighbourhood on the 1881 census. The bricks on the inside of the archway are very old and look to be original. The archway is much wider than the usual entry associated with back-to-back courts but maybe this was because the 'front' houses are tradesmen's premises and require access for delivery. Or maybe the arch was widened more recently in order to use the court for parking cars.

The 1891 census has William and Ruth living at 22 James Street (off St. Paul's Square), with Julia, Annie & Fred (Obediah). William's occupation says 'builder'

In 1901 William, now aged 70, is still living in James Street with his two youngest children Annie (26) and Fred (Obediah, 20), but not Ruth.
