Mrs. Lena Rivers
Rome – Mrs. Lena Rivers, 78, widow of Victor J. Rivers, of Stokes – Westernville Rd., West Branch RD 1, died last night in a Rome hospital after a long illness.
She was born May 12, 1881 in Isle Mott, Vt., daughter of the late Peter and Adeline Ratta Vanslett. She was married to Peter Bessette on June 19, 1900, in Coopersville. He died in 1909. She was married to Victor J. Rivers in Ogdensburg, on May 10, 1911. He died in 1941.
Mrs. Rivers had lived in West Branch for the last three years. She previously lived in Mohawk Hill and Albany.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Rome.
She leaves four sons, Victor J. Rivers Jr., of West Branch with whom she lived the last three years; Joseph Bessette of Burlington, Vt., Howard Bessette of Seaside, Calif., and Lloyd Bessette of Ticonderoga; three sisters, Mrs. Peter Bessette of Plattsburgh, Mrs. Arthur P. O’Clair of Burlington; and Mrs. Edward Crook of Rome; a brother, Peter J. Vansleet of Burlington, 17 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10 Wednesday from the Martin J. Nunn Funeral Home, 418 N. George St., and at 10:30 from St. Mary’s Church, where a Requiem High Mass will be offered. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rome.
Calling hours will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 tomorrow.
