Kenneth Bass

BRAZIL - Kenneth Bass, Sr., 88 of Brazil passed away March 21, 2006, at 7 p.m. at St. Vincent Clay Hospital. He was born Dec. 14, 1917, in Clay County the son of Theodore Bass, Sr. and Laura Mae Bryan Bass. He attended Van Buren High School, before going to work on the railroad following his fathers' death. On Dec. 2, 1940, he married Kathryn Marie Doliana. He started working at the Brazil Fire Department before going to serve in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. After the service, he went back to work at the Brazil Fire Department and later became the fire chief, serving as chief for eight years, retiring in 1969. Following retirement, he continued working in maintenance, and machine work for Log Cabin Coal, Clarks Sand and Gravel, and the Windbreaker Plant.
He was always a hard working family man and he was a loyal fan of the Indiana Pacers, the St. Louis Cardinals, and most of all a fan of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He watched all of the grandchildren's games and was called "Grandpa Bass" by many children at Clay Youth League. He planted a huge garden every year, and enjoyed giving away the bounty of the garden to family, friends, and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathryn Doliana Bass, Nov. 28, 2000; an infant son, John Joseph Bass, and son, Kenny Bass, Jr.; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Weaver, and Virginia Freeman; two brothers, Edward "Bob" Bass and Theodore Bass, Jr., and four siblings in infancy; and step-parents, Joseph and Mary Howald.
He is survived by his children, Mary Kathryn Lanham and husband Bill of Brazil, daughter-in-law, Sue Bass of Brazil, three sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Vickie Bass of Fishers, Tom and Suzan Bass of West Land, Mich., and Paul and Joyce Bass of Brazil; 11 grandchildren, Curt Lanham, Teresa Roberts and husband Charlie, Mike Lanham, Kent and Sally Bass, Eric and Kris Bass, Jennifer and Kim Smith, Amy and John Compton, Angie and Shaun Ringholz, Andy and Julie Bass, Justin and Jessica Bass, and Graig Bass; 17 great-grandchildren, Daniel Roberts, Betty Kathryn Roberts, Alex Lanham, Darcy Bass, Shelby Bass, Damon Bass, Morgan Bass, Meghan Bass, Camdyn Bass, Hannah Smith, Trevor Compton, Grant Compton, Drake Ringholz, Amelia Ringholz, Kendra Bass, Matthew Bass, and Trent Bass; sister-in-law, Jean Bass of Brazil; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 11 a.m. at Annunciation Church. Visitation is one hour before services at French Funeral home. Departure to the church will be at 10:50 a.m. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to Clay Youth League, the American Heart Association, or the charity of your choice.
