      Frances Vaughan Exum

      ELKIN ? Frances Vaughan Exum, the wife of Wyatt Patrick Exum III and the mother of Patricia Exum Bassett, died on Monday, Jan. 2, 2006. She was 87 years old. Mrs. Exum was born in Martinsville, Va., on July 14, 1918, as the older daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bunyan Charles Vaughan. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Galax, Va., where Mr. Vaughn founded Vaughan-Bassett Furniture CO. Two years later, Frances? sister, Margaret, was born. Mrs. Exum was a graduate of Chatham Hall School and Hollins College, where she majored in music. She married Lt. Wyatt Patrick Exum III, an Air Force pilot, on Oct. 25, 1941, just six weeks before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. She would spend much of the next four years living at her parents? home on Stuart Drive in Galax while Wyatt fought in World War II. Wyatt and Frances? daughter, Pat, was born n September 1942. The family lived in Galax after the war, eventually moving to their home on Country Club Lane, Wyatt was the executive vice president and sales manager at Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. until his death in 1983. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co., Vaughan Furniture Co. and American Mirror Co. She also served on the first building board of Twin County Memorial Hospital and Hollins College Alumnae Board. For many years, Mrs. Exum was a member of First Baptist Church of Galax, where she served as a member of the Women?s Missionary unon and as superintendent of the Primary Department Sunday school. She later joined Wyatt as a member of First United Methodist Church of Galax. Frances Exum was a lifelong musician and gardener, an avid and accomplished bridge player, a lover of literature, a gracious hostess and a proud, loving and supportive daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Vaughan; her beloved sister, Margaret Vaughan Higgins; and her husband, Wyatt Patrick Exum III. She is survived by her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Bassett III, of Roaring Gap. Her grandchildren are Doug Bassett and his wife, Ellen, of Winston-Salem, Wyatt Bassett and his wife, Bartlett, of Winston-Salem and Fran Poole and her husband, Ashton, of New York City. She has nine-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her nieces, Becky Higgins Dorshorst of Tulsa, Okla, and Peggy Higgins Rhodes of Arlignton, Va. The family is extremely grateful for the loving and thoughtful care given to Mrs. Exum by Katy Finney, Patsy Holcomb and Anita Southard. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today, Jan. 3, at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, at Felts Memorial Cemetery in Galax. A memorial service will then be held at 11:30 a.m. at Roaring Gap Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Mrs. Exum?s honor to be made to the Alzheimer?s Association, Roanoke Region, 2728 Colonial Ave., Suite 2, Roanoke, VA 24015. Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galas is in charge of the arrangements.
