Mrs. Jane Bassett
It is with regret that we record the passing of Mrs. Jane Bassett, wife of Mr. William Bassett, which occurred at her residence, ?Marlow?, Canowindra, last Friday, November 6. Mrs. Bassett had been in indifferent health for about two years, suffering from heart trouble. She also had an accident over 12 months ago and injured her arm, which provided a handicap for a time. Although in ill health, her death came as a shock to the family, for just before the sad occurrence she had been fanning herself, the weather being warm, and she had a heart seizure and passed away without warning.
Mrs. Bassett was born at Egerton, Victoria, 75 years ago last February, and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Irvine. She was married to Mr. Bassett in 1877, on the 25th of July, which incidentally was the date of the marriage of her eldest son, Mr. Thomas A. Bassett, of Canowindra, and also the latter?s son, Mr. W.E. Bassett, of Nyrang Creek, the ceremony being performed at Smeaton, in Victoria. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Bassett lived at St. Bastian, near Bendigo, where farming was the pursuit of the husband. They later went to New Zealand for two years and returned to Campbell?s Forest, also near Bendigo, till, in 1898, they came to the Canowindra district to take up what was then some bush country and known as ?Pine Lodge,? Lockwood, where they resided until they retired at ?Marlow,?, Rodd Street, Canowindra, after a very successful period in farming.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett reared a family of six sons and five daughters, who collectively are a great credit to their parents and who are all most highly respected residents of the districts where they reside. They are: Mr. Thomas A. Bassett, of Canowindra; Mr. William I. Bassett, of Parkes; Mr. Arthur J. Bassett, of Nyrang Creek; Mr. George D. Bassett, of Forbes; Mr. Frank E. Bassett, of Birriwa, Gulgong district; Mrs. Ray C. Bassett, of Nelungaloo, Parkes; Miss Emily J. Bassett and Mrs. A. Stinson, of ?Marlow?; Miss Margaret ?Peggy? Bassett, a teacher in the Education Department, Sydney, Miss Alice Bassett, of the Commercial Banking Co. of Sydney, Sydney, and Mrs. Fred Young, Cowra. There are also 28 grand children and one great grandchild left to mourn their great loss.
Five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bassett celebrated their golden wedding and it was the occasion of a great gathering of the family and friends when they were the recipients of many tokens of esteem to mark the auspicious occasion.
Mrs. Bassett was a very fine lady and it was an honor to have her friendship. She was most hospitable and had a jovial nature, radiating sunshine and happiness wherever she went. It is no wonder that her children have proved such exemplary characters in the communities where they live .She was one of those whom the Psalmist had in mind when he said ?A woman of worth who can find, her price is far above rubles.?
On Sunday the final obsequies were carried out by Rev. T. McDougall, pastor of the Cowra-Canowdinra Presbyterian Circuit. He conducted the first part of the funeral ceremony at the late home of deceased and then at the graveside he concluded the ceremony in the presence of a vast concourse of relatives and friends of the deceased and her family, some coming even 70 miles to pay the last mark of respect. The coffin was carried from the home to the hearse and from the hearse to the graveside by deceased?s six sons, which was unique. Rev. McDougal said it was unusual to depart from the usual service at the graveside, but he could not let the occasion pass without a public tribute on behalf of those present. He said that there were some who thought that because they lived in the cities where there was all the glare that they carried on all the good work, but each could in his or her own little home or town carry out most important duties. Mrs. Bassett had been two of the greatest things anyone could be in this world ? faithful wife and a good and true mother. Having committed the body to the grave, the ceremony concluded. Messrs. Ayrton had charge of the mortuary arrangements.
