NITSCHKE, James Bassett
James Bassett Nitschke was born in Austin, Tx. on Dec. 28, 1924, and passed away on October 8, 2013.
Jim was proud to be a 4th generation Austinite whose grandfather oversaw the original brick paving of Congress Avenue. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Edward Nitschke and Mayme Cocreham Nitschke.
After 64 years of marriage, he is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Tyler Nitschke, and three daughters: Mary Kay Mraz and husband Tom; Beth Stevener and husband Mike; and Lucy Biggs and husband Karl; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and his sister, Mary Alice Smith.
He served in the U.S.Army Air Force in WWII as a corporal. He owned and operated Speedway Radio Shop while finishing his BBA from U.T. Austin. He graduated from St. Mary's Law School in 1955.
Jim served on the vestry of St. David's Episcopal Church, was a 32degree Mason, and member of the Ben Hur Shrine. He worked for Farmer's Insurance Group for 36 years and served on the Arbitration Board of Insurance.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 11, from 1:00-2:00pm at Weed-Corley-Fish North with services following at 2:00pm in the chapel. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
