Robert Austin Bassett, born February 15, 1927, of Delano, CA passed away on October 13, 2009 surrounded by his family. He was born and raised in Delano where he farmed and ranched. Robert was one of seven children born to Charles Bassett and Ethel Livingston Bassett and graduated from Delano High School in 1944. After high school, he served in the Coast Guard during World War II and was part of the rebuilding efforts in Japan. From Japan, his fleet sailed through the Panama Canal to receive honorable discharge from the Service in New York City. Robert came home to Delano where he managed the family farm, growing grapes and raising cattle and poultry, until his death on Tuesday. On May 2, 1953, he married Carol Ann Kauffman of Circleville, KS. Together, they raised five children. Robert is survived by his wife, Carol; his sisters, Katherine of Valley Springs and Dorothy of Santa Cruz; his children, Gwen and Robert Sayer of Superior, CO, Alan and Deanna Bassett of Delano, and Brian and Maria Bassett of Tracy; twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Darrell, Merle, and Joe; his sister, Esther; and daughters, Gail and Beth. Robert enjoyed farming and spending time with his prized game fowl. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Monday, October 19, 10:00 a.m., at North Kern Cemetery in Delano, CA.
