Single Car Accident Claims Lives Of 3 Family Members
A single-car accident early Tuesday morning claimed the lives of three Chowan County people.
The accident left five children without parents, including two who are currently enrolled at John A. Holmes High School.
According to N.C. Highway Patrolman J.S. Archer, Watson Earl White, 74, Robert L. Bass, 47, and Brenda W. Bass, 47, were killed when the car, driving by White went out of control and slammed into a concrete ditch basin. Ruth Perry White, 73, was severely injured, said Archer, but expected to survive.
Robert and Brenda Bass were married. Mr. and Mrs. White were the parents of Brenda Bass.
Also inside the car was the Bass?s son, John A. Holmes High School Senior J.W. Bass, who sustained only minor injuries.
?At approximately 8 pm,? said Trooper Archer, ?a 1993 Buick Century driven by White was travelling south on N.C. 32 just past Icara Road when it ran off the right side of the road and then crossed over the highway and struck a cement culvert,? said Trooper Archer.
Archer said Brenda Bass and Watson Earl White were killed instantly. Robert Bass died on route to Pitt Memorial Hospital. Archer didn?t know whether Bass was being transported by helicopter or ambulance. Other sources confirmed Bass was transported by helicopter.
Archer said the probable cause of accident was the result of White falling asleep at the wheel. Archer said speed was not a factor in the fatal accident.
During the course of the investigation, Archer said he found that the family had arrived in Norfolk early Tuesday morning after a flight from Utah and were driving home.
Evans Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements for the family. According to Chris Evans, those arrangements had not bee determined at press time Tuesday evening.

Robert L. Bass
Robert Louis ''Bob'' Bass, 47, of 1946 Paradise Road, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996.
Born in Michigan, Mr. Bass was a son of Mrs. Lola Allan Bass of Edenton, and the late Herbert Edward Bass, and the husband of the late Brenda White Bass. Mr. Bass was the retired owner/operator of the Paradise Gardens Nursery in Edenton. He was a member of the Edenton Baptist Church.
Surviving other than his mother are his three daughters, Robin Bass Gowers of Salt Lake City, Utah, Kellee Bass Clark of St. George, Utah, Susan Bass of Edenton; two sons, Michael Bass and John Watson ''J.W.'' Bass, both of Edenton; two brothers, William Edward ''Bill'' Bass and James Herbert ''Jim'' Bass, both of Edenton; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Edenton Baptist Church with burial following in the Beaver Hill Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends at the Evans Funeral Home in Edenton today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Robert Louis ?Bob? Bass
Mr. Robert Louis ?Bob? Bass, 47, of 1946 Paradise Road, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Edenton Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Beaver Hill Cemetery. The family received friends at the Evans Funeral Home in Edenton on Friday.
