Benjamin ?Benny? Wade Bass
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.Benjamin 'Benny' Wade Bass, 89, formerly of Danville, Va., passed away Friday, January 9, 2015, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Born January 25, 1925, in Danville, Va., Benny was a son of the late Jennings Bryan Bass and Frances Wade Bass Rhodes. He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary 'Jenny' Bass Meeler. Benny attended Virginia Tech in Danville, Va. A veteran of the United States Army, he served in Company F 505th Parachute Infantry 82nd Air Borne Division; he was a POW during World War II and received three Purple Hearts. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was the owner of Bass Gems & Minerals, a successful business which afforded him the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the United States. Benny was an avid skeet shooter and fisherman; participating in tournaments in North Carolina and Virginia. He and his wife enjoyed spending the winter months at their second home in Florida.Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Wanda Wall Bass; daughter, Pamela J. Blair and husband, Walter Blair III; son-in-law, Hop Meeler, all of Myrtle Beach; two granddaughters, Amy Holloway (Tim) and Ashley Stathatos (Jimmy); five great-grandchildren, Ben, Parker and Trevor Stathatos and Elizabeth and Emma Monaghan.A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Danville, Va., with the Reverend Bob Yeaman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Private interment was at Danville Memorial Gardens.
