SUMTER ? a graveside service for Susan Catharine Bass, 97, will be held at 11 a.m. today in Mayesville Black River Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Edward McLeod officiating. The family will received freidns at the home of her niece, Mrs. Barney L. Williams, 2710 Mohican Drive. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge.
Miss Bass died Wednesday, May 8, 2002 in a local nursing facility. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Fleetwood Jennings Bass and Lois Gertrude Terry Bass.
She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Presbyterian Women of the church. She was also an active member of the D.A.R., the Dames of Court of Honor, the First Families of Virginhia, the First South Carolina Jamestown Society and the Daughters of Founders and Patrios of America. She was also a member of the Sumter County Historial Society, the Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Teige Cantey Chapter of the Colonial Dames and the Magna Carta Society. She was a graduate of Winthrop College. She taught in Gastonia, N.C. for 13 years before coming to Edmunds High School where she taught Latin and algebra for 33 years until her retirement.
Surviving are sister, Mrs. John (Mary Frances) Shaw of Sumter; niece, Mary Catherine Williams and her husband, Dr. Barney L. Williams, of Sumter, nephew, Dr. John Shaw and his wife, Brenda Outlaw Shaw, of Sumter.
