      Dr. Bruce Carter Bass

Dr. Bruce Carter Bass, an agricultural educator in Virginia, died yesterday at his home in Westminster-Canterbury House.

Thomas A. Bass Jr. described his uncle as "a scholarly, studious man who devoted his life to vocational education."

Born in 1908 and the son of a tobacco farmer in Charlotte County, he grew up with an interest in farming. Dr. Bass spent his early life in Charlotte before attending Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he received a bachelor's degree in agriculture in 1934.

Dr. Bass didn't follow his father in farming, though. Instead, he taught vocational agriculture at Dan River High School for eight years.

In 1941, he joined the U.S. Army and served from 1941 to 1947, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. He then went back to teaching, tying the two careers together.

"After the Army, in 1947, he was the assistant supervisor of veterans on- farm training, a Virginia program teaching veterans how to get back into farming," his nephew said.

Dr. Bass decided to pursue higher education and returned to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, where he received a master's degree in 1950. Five years later he received a doctorate of education from Pennsylvania State University.

He later joined the staff of Virginia Tech and, until his retirement in 1972, devoted his time to teaching and research in vocational education.

Upon his retirement, he moved to Richmond. He was a member of the Masons and the American Legion. Dr. Bass was also a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by a brother, Joseph Jennings Bass Jr., of Charlotte, N.C. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Westminster- Canterbu ry chapel.

The family requests that donations be made to the Memorial Fund of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 7343 Hermitage Road, Richmond.
