Richard E. Bass, 55, State Official, Dies (Picture included)
Richard Edward Bass, 55, director of vocational education for the State Department of Education, died Sunday at a Richmond hospital.
Mr. Bass, a native of Lunenberg county who live at 3251 Stratford rd., was named to his position in 1958. He had been in the field of education fro 31 years.
He was a graduate of VPI and received his mather?s degree in agricultural education from the University of Virginia.
He was instructor of vocational agriculture at Chilhowie High School from 1929 to 1939. He was successively state supervisor, director and assistant state administrator of the National Youth Administration.
State Supervisor
He was appointed assistant state supervisor of agricultural education in 1946 and in 1941 became state supervisor of vocational agriculture.
He was president of the American Vocational Association and had served as its vice president for three years. Also he was national treasurer for the Future Farmers of America.
In 1957, Mr. bass was named Man of the Year in Agriculture for Virginia, and in 1959 he was awarded the Outstanding Service Award of the American VOc ational Association and the Honorary American Farmer degree of the Future Farmers of America.
He was a member of the American Vocational Association and the National ocational Agriculture Teachers Association.
He was an honorary member of the Young Farmers of Virginia and the Virginia Association, Distributive Education Clubs of America. He was also a member of the Richmond Rotary Club.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elinor Copnhaver Bass; a son, Richard Bass of Richmond, and four brothers, C. Carter Bass of Blacksburg, Gordon S. Bass of Keysville, Joseph H. Bass Jr. of Charlotte, and Thomas A. Bass of Richmond.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sutherland-Brown Fuenral Home, with burial in Westhampton Memorial Park.
