Pharmacist George M. Bass Died Friday
George Mabry Bass, 60, who operated the Bass Walgreen Drug Store in Albion from 1947 to 1955, died Friday afternoon, June 21, 1968 at the Richland Memorial Hospital after a series of heart attacks.
Final rites at Nale's Funeral Home with Presbyterian pastors, Rev. Luke Markve of Salem and Rev. John C. Roberts of Olney officiating. Interment at Graceland Cemetery.
Dr. Bass, a native of Olney, moved from Decatur to Albion and established the Bass Drug Store in 1947. He closed the store in 1955 and became associated with the Weber Medical Clinic at Olney, 10 years.
For the past several years he had been employed as a roving pharmacist, filling in for druggists in all sections of the state in emergency situations and during vacations.
He was married in 1948 to the former Iris Zimmerly of Decatur, a commercial artist who was employed as art instructor at Edwards High School for three years from 1955 to 1959.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Iris Bass of Albion; a sister, Myrtle Bass of Olney; and two brothers, Otto Bass and Dr. Paul Bass, a Wilmette dentist.
Born February 12, 1908 in Olney, he was the son of George A. Bass and the former Nora Kyle. Dr. Bass was a graduate of the University of Illinois, a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and the Edwards County Sportsman Club.
He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a veteran of World War II, stationed in England for a time. He was a member of VFW, American Legion and the Mt.Carmel Elks Lodge.
