      Obituary
William Bassett, a very old resident of this district, died in the Heathcote Hospital on Tuesday morning last, at the age of 76 years, the cause of death being heart affliction. The deceased was admitted to the Hospital on 12th December last, suffering from a dislocated hip, which was caused through a fall he received whilst on his way home, and he lay in the bush for over 24 hours before being discovered. This, no doubt, accelerated his death, as although the injury to his hip was cured, he suffered greatly with his heart. He arrived in Victoria from England (where he was born) in 1852 and came to McIvor in 1855, where he engaged in mining for many years, for a number of years being mates with the late Mr. Robert Barker, with whom he was for a long time puddling, and was well known and respected in the town and district. He was unmarried and leaves a sister (rms. Gardent) who resides in England. Of late years he was unable to follow his occupation. For years he kept a number of beehives, in which he took much interest. His funeral took place yesterday morning, the remains being interred in the Heathcote Cemetery, the burial service being read by Mr. A. M. Williams, of St. John’s Church of England.
