- In 1833, Samuel was convicted for picking pockets and was transported to Australia aboard the ship "Fairlane" to serve a fourteen year sentence. Samuel Bassett and Mary Malloy were married in West Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. They settled in Patrick's Plains, New South Wales, Australia and had seven children. After serving his sentence, Samuel and his family returned to England where they stayed for a short time before heading to Canada where they settled in Eldon, Victoria County, Ontario.

The Bassett family resided in Thorah Township; in 1861, and had removed to Eldon Township by 1871. Some records indicated Samuel and Mary were from England; others suggested Samuel was born in Australia. At various times, members of this family lived in Mara. Peter and Henry married Sheridan sisters, Ellen and Mary. John Bassett, a younger brother of Peter and Henry, was buried in St. Andrew's Parish cemetery, Brechin, Mara Township.
