  Notes	Notes on John from Robert Bassett: "He was of average size, full head of dark hair, brown eyes, a simple soul, very religious, loved all children. Had a fine bass singing voice, forgiving in nature. Favorite saying about a naughty child "he'll soon get to know better". Had a knack with bees, could put hands in a hive without getting stung. He was groom and gardener to the village parson, Rev. Cecil Squire. His weekly wage was 16 ?? and the rent of of his cottage was 1/6d. Kept 1 ?? for tobacco etc. On occasion would purchase a bottle of Johnny Walker whiskey from the local inn, price 3/6d. This would have to last a long time, being so costly. His wife and he would take a small tot in the evening before retiring. He was a year younger than his wife. Leslie, the eldest grandchild, was called "the Boy" in their home.
