      B. Michael Bass

BASS, B. Michael, 70, of Chester, Va., peacefully passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022, after a two-and-a-half year battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis aka Lou Gehrig's Disease). Michael was preceded in death by his father, Billy Bass; and infant brother, Mark Bass. He is survived by his mother, Laura Bass of Colonial Heights; his wife, Eileen Burke Bass; son, Matt Bass and wife, Ashley; grandchildren, Kyler, Bennett Michael and baby Chase (due April 2022); sister, Sandra Bass Watkins (Dan); nieces, Laura Jones (Marshall Jackson) and Jennifer Freeman (Brian) and their children, Jaiden, Emery, Ethan, Emily, Logan; and great-nephew, Caleb Lee (Jasmine) and their children, Isaiah and Noa. Michael is also survived by former wife and friend, Debra Bass; stepdaughter, Paige Lewis; and son, Hunter; Williams family cousins, Burke family and cousins, Gamma Fraternity brothers and sisters and various friends, former coworkers and former teammates. Michael grew up in Colonial Heights, Va., and graduated from Ferrum College. Michael was a great multi-sport athlete, having played football, baseball, basketball, softball and golf. He was the proud quarterback at Colonial Heights High School and Ferrum College. Michael had many fond memories of his days as a Colonial and a Panther and enjoyed reminiscing with his former teammates. Michael worked in the Spruance Division of DuPont in the Richmond, Va., area. While at DuPont, Michael played softball for the company and traveled throughout the country to play other divisions of the company. Michael retired early from DuPont at age 58 and was very blessed to have 10 years of healthy retirement. Michael loved playing golf at various courses throughout Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. As a result, Michael and Eileen enjoyed many beach trips and golf outings in Virginia, Outer Banks and North Myrtle Beach. Michael's greatest joy was his family. He especially lit up when he had the opportunity to spend time with his son, Matt and his grandchildren. The family would like to thank the many people who supported Michael and Eileen during their ALS journey, especially Respiratory Therapist and friend, Chereka Logan, Matthew Minter and the James River Hospice Team including Donna Upchurch, Sarah Waller, Natasha Harris, Auyantae Davis, Kim Fauci, the VCU ALS Team led by Dr. Kelly Gwathmey, Team Quinn, Project Home, Team Gleason, our pALS and cALS and the ALS Association. Per Michael's wishes, there will be a private family graveside service in Blandford Cemetery; Celebration of Life to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in memory of Michael Bass to Team Quinn, www.teamquinnva.org, or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
