  Notes	PIONEER PASSES Mr. W. Bassett, Canowindra Veteran MR. WILLIAM BASSETT, who died at Canowindra recently at the age of 83, was one of the old pioneers who blazed the trail in what are now rich farming districts. He had followed farming, pursuits all his life in two Australian States as well as in New Zealand. Born at Barrabool Hills, near Ballarat, he commenced farming in Victoria at an early age. He had a genius for machinery and started the first wire - binder ever seen in the Bendigo district. This machine so frightened the horses that they set off at a pace which hurled the sheaves over the fence, on to the road. Mr. Bassett took up a wild and scrubby holding in the Canowindra district 34 years ago, and improved it till it was one of the show places of the district. When he grew his first crops on this property the wheat had to be hauled 30 miles to the railway, and usually brought about 2/6 a bushel. He was keenly interested in all public affairs, and was president of the Marong Shire Council, in Victoria, and later of the Boree Shire Council, in this State. Though a fearless fighter, he was respected and admired by all with whom he came in contact. When Larras Lake, near Molong, was resumed for closer settlement, Mr. Bassett was employed as valuator on behalf of the Government, the vendors having appealed against the valuations. He reared a family of six sons and five daughters, Messrs. T. A. and A. J. Bassett, Canowindra; W. J. Bassett, Parkes; G. D. Bassett, M.L.C., Forbes; F. E. Western Champion, NSW, Australia, Friday, 25 November 1932 Obituary Mr. William Bassett An old and respected resident of the Canowindra district, in the person of William Bassett, of ?Marlow,? died on Monday evening at the age of 84 years. The late Mr. Bassett was a native of Barrabool Hills, near Ballarat (Vic.), and had to turn his hand to hard work from an early age, helping his mother to support a large family of 13 brothers and sisters. On leaving home Mr. Bassett went first to Bendigo and then to New Zealand finally settling in the Canowindra district 34 years ago. He followed farming and grazing pursuits up to his retirement a few years ago. The late Mr. Bassett took an active part in public life from and early age. In Victoria he was a member of the Marong Shire Council, and after he came to Canowindra he took a very keen interest in any movement affecting the welfare of the district, and was one of the most active fighters fro the railway extension from Cowra to Canowindra. He was a member of the Boree Shire Council and filled the office of President. His wife predeceased him by a year. He leaves a family of six sons and five daughters: Miss E.J. Bassett (Nyrang Creek), W.I. Bassett (Parkes), G.D. Bassett, M.L.C., (Forbes), Ray Bassett (Nelungoloo), and Frank Bassett (Dunedoo). The funeral took place to the Canowindra cemetery on Tuesday.
