Bass was born in Newport News about 1902, served in the Army in World War I and joined the Newport News Police Department in 1926. A member of the department?s motorcycle patrol, Bass died of a skull fracture Sept. 25, 1933, when he hit the left rear of a car traveling along Huntington Avenue near 69th Street after he was coming off patrol in Huntington Park. The motorcycle skidded 45 feet on the pavement. He was 31 and was survived by two brothers and three sisters.
