Robert L. Bass Dies Saturday

Kingstree - September 6 - Robert Lee Bass, 76, died at the Kelley sanatorium here Saturday afternoon, after a critical illness of several weeks. Funeral services were held at the residence in Hemingway, Sunday afternoon, and interment followed in Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville, with the Reverend W. S. Dorsett, pastor of the Andrews Baptist church, officiating.
Mr. Bass was born and reared in Lydia. He had made his home in Williamsburg County for a number of years, having moved to Hemingway twelve years ago. He was married over fifty-one years ago to Miss Elizabeth Josey of Lydia, they having celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 31, 1925. Mr. Bass had extensive farming interests in the county; was a direction of the Hemingway depository and the Hemingway board of trade; had served for a number of years as a member of the school board there, and was an officer in the Kingstree Baptist Church for many years. He was serving his third term as mayor of Hemingway.
In addition to his widow, Mr. Bass is survived by two sons and two daughters as follows: Mrs. James K. Deaver, Hemingway; Mrs. Grover Parsons, Andrews; N. Burton Bass, Switzerland; and James S. Bass, Hartsville. He also leaves seven grandchildren, and a wide family connection in Darlington county.
Mr. Bass was a son of the late Captain James E. Bass and his wife, Sarah Lucas Bass of Darlington County. He also leaves two brothers and one sister as follows: J.E. Bass, Rock Hill; J.L. Bass, Conway; and Miss Bannie Bass, Greenville.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Bass, Hemingway
Celebrate Their Golden Wedding Anniversary
Hemingway, Jan. 4 ? Special: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Bass Tuesday afternoon entertained at a reception, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. For the occasion the entire lower floor of the house was thrown en suite and decorated with Southern smilax, ferns and chrysanthemums in shades of yellow and gold. Golden colored candles in gold and silver candlesticks and candelabra used throughout the rooms, further accentuated the color motif.
As the guests arrived they were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Hemingway and directed to the register by Mrs. and Mrs. A.I Woodcock, of Georgetown. Receiving in the gift room were Mr. and Mrs. Wigfall Losemen, of Charleston.
Dr. and Mrs. J.G. Ulmer invited the guests into the living room and presented them to the receiving line composed of the bride and bridegroom of fifty years and the following who were attendants in their wedding: Mrs. Newton Harrell, Darlington; Mrs. Dora Pate, Lydia; Mrs. Alice Jeffords, Darlington; Mr. J.E. Bass, Rock Hill and Mr. J.A. Heron, Bishopville.
The guests were shown to the dining room by Mr. and Mrs. J. Walton McLeod, of Walterboro.
In the dining room the flowers, other decorations and table and appointments emphasized the gold color note. Mrs. James S. Bass, of Hartsville and Mrs. N. Burton Bass, of Switzerland, poured tea and coffee from silver containers. Misses Elizabeth Deaver, of Spartanburg; Hazel McLeod, Georgetown; Elizabeth and Mada Brown, Lane; Katie Harmon and Sara Cannon, Lillian and Caroline Parsons, of Andrews, assisted.
Entertaining in the sun room and bidding the guests good bye were Mr. and Mrs. L.S. Hyman.
One hundred guests called.
Mr. Bass and the former Miss Elizabeth Josey were born and reared at Lydia, both coming from families long prominent in that section. It was here they were married fifty years ago at the Mount Elon Baptist church. The late Rev. Mack A. Pittman performed the ceremony. Six of their wedding attendants are still living, five of whom received with them and have already been named. Mr. Bass carried his bride to his plantation home near Flinn?s cross roads where they lived until twelve years ago when they came to Hemingway where Mr. Bass has extensive farming interests.
Mr. Bass is now serving a third term as mayor of the town. He is a director of the Hemingway Depository and the Hemingway board of trade. For a long period of time he served as a member of the board of trustees of the Hemingway schools and was an official in the Hemingway Baptist church a number of years.
Due to ill health Mrs. Bass has been kept in much of the last year but still maintains a keen interest in the happenings of the outside world.
Mr. and Mrs. Bass have two daughters, two sons and seven grand-children; Mrs. James K. Deaver, recently of Union by now of Hemingway; Mrs. Grover C. Parsons, Andrews; James S. Bass, Hartsville; N. Burton Bass, Switzerland; James S. Bass, Jr., a student at Clemson; Andrea Lee Parson, a student at Furman; Miss Elizabeth Deaver, Spartanburg; James Keith Daever, Jr., Miss Lillian Parsons, Miss Carolina Parsons and Bobby Bass.
