Celestine Bassett Coats
Died Friday, Jan. 20, 1995, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. She was 82, a native and resident of Baton Rouge. She was a retired East Baton Rouge Parish School Board food service manager. Visiting at Gilbert Funeral Home, 1 p.m. until wake services at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Religious services at Israelite Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Charles L. Burris. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park. Survived by a sister, Adeline B. Tucker,; seven daughters, Georgia C. Dunbar, Gloria C. Harris, Mildred C. Burgess, Lulla V. Coats, Wilmer C. Jones, Olivet C. O'Connor and Edna Y Coats, all of Baton Rouge; a son and daughter-in-law, Wilbert L. Jr. and Christy Coats, Baton Rouge; 24 grandchildren and their spouses, David Jr. and Beverly Dunbar, Donald and Willie Faye Dunbar, Darrel Coats, Rita and Joseph Payne, Brenda Johnson, Cheryl Jenkins, Marva Williams, Reginald Harris, Michael Harris, Leonard Harris and Howard Jr. and Iris Burgess, all of Baton Rouge, Joy and Vernon Dixonand Celestine Renee and Demetrius Ruffin, all of Atlanta, Ga., Karla Burgess, Lorri Burgess, Aimee Jones, Johnny O'Connor Jr., Jermaine O'Connor, Jason O'Connor, Elayna O'Connon, Dana Sims, Danielle Sims, Deveeta Sims and Dekeeta Sims, all of Baton Rouge; 1 twin brother, Celestane Bassett; and a great-grandson, Joey Payne. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Celestine Bassett Coats College Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 3716, Baton Rouge, 78021.
