- Joseph Bassett, according to "Sweet's New Atlas of Onondaga, New York", 1874, lived a short distance southwest of Skaneateles between a Snow family and a Parsons family. He served in Company E, 9th New York Heavy Artillery during the Civil War.

Found Dead in His Chair
Joseph Bassett Expired Suddenly at His Home Near Skaneateles
Skaneateles - February 12 - Joseph Bassett died suddenly yesterday morning at his home two miles southwest of this village. He had been around the house during the morning and shortly before noon he was found by his family dead in his chair. Mr. Bassett, who was in his seventy-first year, was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in Company E, Ninth New York Artillery, on September 1, 1864, at this village and was mustered out in May, 1865. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Frank Bassett of this town, and Fred Bassett, of Oil City, Pennsylvania, and two daughters, Mrs. William Orr and Miss Ella Bassett, both of Oil City. Mr. Bassett returned about a month ago from a visit with his children in Pennsylvania. Mr. Bassett was born at Glastonberry, England, and had lived in this town 56 years..
