      C. Lee Bassett
      Portage - C. Lee Bassett, 88, of Portage, passed away peacefully July 9, 2007, at Divine Savior Healthcare Extended Care, after a long illness. A private family memorial service will be held. The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage is assisting the family.
      He was born January 17, 1919, in Green Bay, to Clifford and Marion (Black) Bassett. He served his country in the United State Navy during World War II as a naval lieutenant navigator. Lee was married to Mary Jane Palmer on September 22, 1944, while in service at Newport, Rhode Island. They shared 62 wonderful years together. Lee was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; family was foremost in his life. Lee graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a business degree prior to his military service. He was an insurance underwriter for Hardware Mutual in Stevens Point, credit manager for G.P.F. in Milwaukee, and credit manager for General Foods in Evanston, Illinois. In 1956, he purchased K-P Shoe Company in Portage and manufactured baby shoes until he retired to Florida in 1983. Lee and Mary Jane returned to Portage early this year.
      He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane, Portage; a daughter, Pamela (Douglas) Williams, Portage; a son, Lee M. Bassett, Bayonet Point, Florida; grandchildren, Rachel Schaaf, Fitchburg and Brianne WIlliams, Portage; great-grandchildren, Eli Colson, Portage; Benjamin Schaaf and Kaylee Schaaf, both of Fitchburg; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford, his mother, Marion Bassett and his brother, Robert Bassett.
      The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Divine Savior Healthcare and Dr. Paul Slavik for their help and kindness during this difficult time.
