      Hastings resident J. Vern Bassett, 82, of 1069 S. Hastings Ave. died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
      Rosary is 8:30 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home Chapel. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Brouillette officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.       Mr. Bassett was born Sept. 2, 1918, to Arthur and Gladys (Rynearson) Bassett in Adams County. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1936. On May 28, 1940, he married Phyllis M. Brouillette. He worked at Rutt's Pharmacy. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45. He attended the Neon Institute of Cincinnati, Ohio, and became owner/operator of Hastings Neon Sign Co. His wife died April 25, 2000.
      He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1346, American Legion and Eagles.
      Survivors are one daughter, Kathy Shafer of Trumbull; one son, Tom of Republican City; two sisters, Dorese Willis of Rupert, Idaho and Mary Mazour of Penacook, N.H.; three brothers, Donald of Ridgecrest, Calif. and Harold and Howard, both of Hastings; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by three brothers.
      Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia's Catholic Church Renovation Fund.

      Hastings resident, J. Vern Bassett, 82, of 1069 So. Hastings, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
      Rosary services will be Wednesday, April 4, 2001; 8:30 p.m. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mss of Chrisitan Burial will be Thursday, April 5, 2001; 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with Father James Meysenburg officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.
      J. Vern Bassett was born September 1, 1918 in Adams County, Nebraska to Arthur and Gladys (Rynearson) Bassett. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1936.
      He married Phyllis M. Brouillette on May 28, 1940 and she preceded him in death in 2000. He worked at Rutt's Pharmacy before serving in the United States Army from February 1943 to November 1945. He attended Neon Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio and became owner/operator of Hastings Neon Sign Company. He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. #1346, American Legion and Eagles. He had his private pilot license and enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.
      J. Vern Bassett was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Phyllis, brothers, Roger, John and Robert.
      Survivors include, daughter and son-in-law - Kathy and Ken Shafter - Trumbull, NE; son and daughter-in-law - Tom and Kathi Bassett - Republican City, NE.
      Seven grandchildren; R. Scott Shafer - Grand Island, NE; Bradley Shafer - Omaha, NE; Brenda Elley - Hastings, NE; Rebecca Anderson - Hastings, NE; James Bassett - Hastings, NE; JoBeth Bassett - Oklahoma City, OK; Tanner Bassett - Republican City, NE.
      Three great-grandchildren; Jennifer Casper, Heide Kraft, Hannah Shafer.
