Thomas Leroy Bass
Corporal Thomas Leroy Bass, the son of Thomas Guy and Susan Mae Bass, was born in Blackwell, Okla, on Aug. 23, 1927, and died as the result of a train wreck on Sept. 14, 148, at Chockiwon, Korea.
This accident occurred when the Puson to Seoul ?Liberator? was struck by another passenger train.
At the time of his death, he was in the 81st ordnance tank maintenance company, and was in charge of a production carpenter shop.
He attended the Blackwell schools until he enlisted in the navy on September 28, 1944, and was machinist?s mate third class in the Seabees.
He served overseas until May 24, 1946, when he was discharged with the Victory medal, American campaign medal, and Asiatic-Pacific campaign medal, and one star.
He was employed at the Blackwell Zinc company smelter until he reenlisted in the army on January, 1947.
He took training at Fort Ord Calif., and in February, 1947, was sent to Korea, where he served until the time of his death.
His father, Thomas Guy Bass, preceded him in death on Jan. 1933.
He attended the United Brethren church of Blackwell as a child, and joined the church.
Corporal Bass is survived by his mother, five sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Holt of Wichita, Kans., Mrs. Doris Shoemaker of Blackwell, Mrs. Marquerite Dias of Hayward, Calif., Mrs. Zella Hodges of Bristow, Okla., Mrs. Esther Rhea of Blackwell; three brothers, Donald and John of Blackwell, and Private Daniel Bass of the 11th airborne division, now at home as honor guard of Corporal Bass.
Also his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Nancy Ruth of Blackwell, seven nieces, twelve nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
