Barbara Bassett (1952-2016)
Apr. 8, 1952 - Sept. 3, 2016 Barbara Jean Bassett, 64, died peacefully on Saturday, September 3rd, 2016 at Providence Hospital in Mobile, following a yearlong battle with leukemia at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She is survived by her husband Alan "Sandy" Galdis, her daughters Julia Coker and Laurin Taylor, her son-in-law Christopher Coker, her brother William "Doc" Bassett, her sister-in-law Betty Bassett, her dogs Arthur, Usain, Clyde, Zinny and Isaac, and her granddog Norman. Barbara was born in Washington, D.C. to William H. Bassett and Jean O'Gwynn Bassett, but the family moved to Mobile shortly after. She attended Davidson High School and then obtained a degree in Fine Arts from the University of South Alabama. Later, she was an avid collector of mid-century modern furniture and decorative textiles. After her daughters were born, she devoted many years teaching art to children at the Montessori Academy in Mobile. In her lifetime she created a countless number of creative masterpieces. In recent years, Barbara earned the title of Master Gardener and became a volunteer at the Alabama Master Gardeners Association. She enjoyed working the phone lines, researching and answering questions from local gardeners about their own projects. She also designed a range of cards featuring her beautiful drawings of the Mobile Botanical Gardens, which were sold in their gift shop. Barbara had a passion for dogs, and she and Sandy were great friends of the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where she volunteered at their Second Chance Resale Shop. Over the past forty years, dozens of dogs needing forever homes were lucky enough to be adopted and loved by them. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to the Mobile Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 620 Zeigler Circle West, Mobile, AL 36608.
