Joyce Elaine Bassett (picture included)
Joyce Elaine Bassett, 75, died Sunday, July 3, 2011, at Village Ridge, Marion, following a courageous battle with cancer. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, at Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Will Jackson. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour before the service at the church. Per Joyce?s wishes, the casket will remain closed at all times. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin of Marion; her children, Kathy (Don) Zimmerman of Marion, Cindy (Kenny) Dreyer of Tipton, Kim (Larry) Hathaway of Cedar Rapids, and Craig (Donna) Bassett of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Alvernaz of Marion; and a brother, Jerry (Evelyn) Young of Sacramento, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Dorothy; and three brothers, Fred, Olin, and Robert.
Joyce was born Aug. 17, 1935, the daughter of Olin and Thelma (Haynor) Young in Wyoming, Iowa. She graduated from Central City High School in 1953. Joyce married Marvin Bassett on May 7, 1955, at First United Methodist Church, Marion. She worked at Collins Radio, Linn County Humane Society and then retired from the Cedar Rapids Animal Hospital, where she worked for 21 years. Joyce loved her family and pets dearly. She also enjoyed crocheting and bowling. She was a member of Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian Church, where she had served as an Elder and on the Sessions Committee.
