RALEIGH, N.C., (UPI) ? Burly Negro janitor Matthew Phillip Bass, 42, stoicly went to his death today in the state gas chamber for the knife raping of a white mother of three children.
Bass was pronounced dead at 10:17 a.m., 13 minutes and 55 seconds after the switch releasing the deadly cyanide gas was pulled. Bass was the 361st person to be executed by the state and the 189th to die by gas.
Described by Warden K.B. Bailey as ?troublesome? during his stay on death row, Bass was handcuffed while he was led to the gas chamber, a procedure reserved for unruly prisoners. However, Bass remained quiet and offered no resistance as he was strapped into the chair.
