In Memory of Laura May Bassett
February 10, 1926 – October 13, 2012
Descended from Oregon pioneers, Laura May Hoss Bassett was born on 2/10/26 to Hal and Myrtle (Lantz) Hoss in Oregon City, the youngest of 4 children. The family moved between Salem, Taft, Toledo and Molalla before and after Hal served as Secretary of State from 1928 - 1934. Laura graduated from Molalla High School, where she was class Valedictorian, then studied at OSU for one year. Moving to Portland, she worked for the John Deere Plow Company and as a receptionist at KEX Radio. She later worked at the Deschutes County Clerk office. Following WWII, Laura met Clifford "Bud" Bassett, Jr. on a blind date; they wed on 6/6/47. They were married for 33 years before Bud’s death, living in Bend and Portland. In 1980, Laura met her longtime companion, Jerry Goodwin, with whom she celebrated 32 years together just weeks prior to her passing. A longtime resident of NE Portland, Laura was a homemaker and the neighborhood Avon Lady for over 45 years, making lifelong friends via her sales route. She was fan of Dixieland and a member of the Traditional Jazz Society. Laura enjoyed dancing, travel, a good laugh, and spending time with family and friends as well as her ritual of morning coffee and keno at Sam’s in Hollywood. The extended family will long remember Christmas Eve at Aunt Laura’s when she was likely to play standards on the piano as the cousins sang along. Despite health challenges of the last few years, Laura retained her sunny disposition and skill at the crossword puzzle until the end, and died at home, just as she’d wished. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanine Bassett (Kyle Newell), and son, Robert (Judy) Bassett of Portland, and sister, Jean Gallagher of Salem. The family wishes to express gratitude to Providence Hospice, most especially Dee, Gail and Erin. A memorial will be held at Ross Hollywood Chapel, 4733 NE Sandy, on Friday, 10/26 at 2pm. Laura May Hoss Wed an Nelscott
SALEM, June 14 (Special) – Miss Laura May Hoss of Portland, daughter of Mrs. Jean B. Hoss and the late Secretary of State Hal Hoss, was married to Clifford Howard Bassett Jr., son of Mrs. George Kerr and Howard Bassett of Portland, at the Little Church by the Sea at Nelscott June 6, Rev. Wagoner officiating.
Mrs. Stanley Swan of Portland was matron of honor and Miss Betty Petteys was bridesmaid. Lloyd Johnson was best man and ushers were Dave Hoss of Salem and John Hoss of Taft. A reception followed the ceremony. The couple will live in Portland.
