- Wendell Bass Obituary (Picture included)
Wendell M. Bass, 701 North Sycamore, died Thursday, September 11, of cancer after an illness of four months. He was 50 years old.
Mr. Bass was a native of Iola, born here June 3, 1925, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John S. Bass.
He graduated from Iola High School in 1943 and joined the Navy in which he served throughout World War II. He and Phyllis Garner were married February 26, 1950, in Iola.
Mr. Bass was employed by the Lehigh Portland Cement Company after he was discharged from the Navy and worked there until the plant closed. He then was employed by the Cities Services Company.
He was active in Little League baseball, serving as an umpire and manager of teams throughout many years. His interest in school athletics was keen, as all three of his sons played football in high school.
He was a member of the Iola Bowling Association and served on the board of USD 257, a position he held at the time of his death.
Mr. Bass was a member of Ward Chapel, A.M.E. Church and the Golden Square Masonic Lodge No. 71 of Iola.
Mrs. Bass survives, as do three sons, Wendell Jr. of Kansas City, Elliott of Iola, and Ralph, who is attending Annapolis.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, September 15, at Ward Chapel, A.M.E. Church with the Rev. R. L. Baynham and Rev. Oorenzo Finnell officiating. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the church or the American Cancer Society.
