On the 1870 Cherokee County census, Mollie Dora Mason is listed as seven years old and living with Margaret Dean and her three sisters.
On the same census, Nicholas Judson Bass, age 13, is listed as living with his father, Willis Bass, and his third wife, Martha Click Robertson Bass. Nicholas? mother Elizabeth Burk Bass, died Oct. 13, 1864, when he was eight years old.
The death of their mothers when they were very young gave Mollie and Nicholas a shared experience, although he came from a large family. Willis Bass had three wives and 15 children. He was a native of Alabama anc aem to Texas before its annexaction to the United States with his wife, Elizabeth Hardein Bass, from South Carolina. They finally settled in Cherokee County, where they helped to form the Salem Baptist Church of Christ at Larissa, Tex., along with Henry Clock and Willis? brother, John Bass.
Nicholas and Mollie m. Dec. 2, 1880, in Cherokee County, where they began farming. Nicholas died Oct. 16, 1896, when his youngest son was only two years old. Mollie never married again. When her second son, Willis Jordan Bass, m. Minnie Ruth McBroom, she moved to Navarro County, Tex., with them. She d. in 1916 in that county and is buried in the Bazette Cemetery.
