Dr. Eldred Bass

Dr. Eldred C. Bass Dr. Eldred C. (Sonny) Bass passed away on June 12, 2014 at Tanner Medical Center. Dr. Bass was born March 12, 1921, the son of local Carrollton grocer Eldred C. Bass, Sr. and Mary Ruth Bass. His early childhood days were spent delivering groceries on his bicycle for his father. Sonny enjoyed squirrel hunting when time allowed. Sonny Bass attended Carrollton High School lettering in football, track, basketball, and baseball. He was President of the Senior Class of 1938 and voted best all around boy, most popular boy, and most handsome and athletic boy. He was captain of the first football team to be named "The TROJANS." His love of athletics and the Trojans lasted his entire life. Dr. Bass initiated the first sports medicine program in Carrollton, a program that gave him much joy and fulfillment. Serving as Trojan team physician for 39 years, he conducted team physicals, oversaw and monitored athletic injuries for hundreds of Trojan athletes and traveled with the team. One of his greatest pleasures was walking the sidelines of Trojan Field on Friday nights where he enjoyed a very special bond with athletes and coaches alike. "Once a Trojan, always a Trojan". E. C. Bass attended West Georgia College and later transferred to Emory University where he received his BS in Biology. He completed his MD degree at The Medical College of Ga. in 1944. Dr. Bass interned at Jefferson-Hillman Hospital in Birmingham, Al. where he literally "bumped" into a nurse on the 8th floor. On March 30, 1948 he married that nurse, the love of his life, Martha Carol Smith from Shawmut, Al. His residency requirements were completed at Highland Baptist Hospital in Birmingham. Dr. Bass served in the armed forces with the Navy Medical Corp at Camp Lejeune and aboard the USS Mississippi. He specialized in surgery, OB-GYN, and orthopedics. In 1948 Dr. Bass started his Family Medicine Practice in Carrollton, Ga. Ten years later he joined Grady Memorial Hospital where he further trained in Internal Medicine although he never quit seeing his beloved Carrollton patients, working at Grady during the week and his Carrollton practice on the weekends. His passion for medicine and his love of his patients made Dr. Bass known throughout Carroll County. Sonny Bass was deeply honored that patients, former patients, and athletes alike continued to warmly greet him as "Doc Bass" long after his retirement from practice in April of 1988. Eldred Bass was one of the founding physicians of the Hill Burton Hospital, which later became Tanner Memorial Hospital. He served as Chief of Staff at Tanner, was a member of the Carroll-Douglas-Haralson Medical Society, a member of the American Medical Association, and the Medical Association of Georgia. Dr. Bass was deeply honored to be able to provide medical care for his community. Medicine and his patients were his passion. Being an avid fisherman, it made little difference to Sonny if he was catching a 6 oz crappie or 600 pound marlin. He fished all over the world hooking black marlin in Pinas Bay, Panama, blue marlin and sails in Cabo San Lucas, and giant tarpon in Rio Parismina, Costa Rica. Dr. Bass passed his passion for fishing on to his children and grandchildren fishing with them at Lake Carroll, West Point Lake, Apalachicola, Fl. and trolling on the gulf coast. Dr. Bass's patients spent their waiting room time reviewing his many catches displayed on the walls. No doubt they sometimes wondered if they were in the doctor's office or the taxidermy shop. Dr. Bass loved football, the Trojans, fishing, gardening, his practice and patients, his friends, family, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and Martha Smith Bass. He lived a long and wonderful life, fulfilling most all his dreams and always knowing he was truly loved. Eldred C. Bass is survived by his four children: Kathy Bass of Carrollton, Judy (Bill) Baisden, of Savannah, Mimi (Dr. Ken) Morgan of Thomaston, and Chris (Cheryl) Bass of Carrollton: his 7 grandchildren, Kennington Bordas, Kason Caldwell, Chad Baisden, Jason Baisden, Andrew Morgan, Ben Morgan, Brooke Bryant, Brooke Phillips, and 11 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Almon Funeral Home on Friday, June 20th from 5 PM until -7 PM. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 21 at 11 AM at the First Methodist Church in Carrollton with Dr. Dean Milford officiating and Dr. Ken Morgan, Dr. Rick Martin, Mrs. Rita Gentry, and Mr. Bob Tatum speaking. Pallbearers will be Boogie Johnson, Vernon Wilkes, Bob Tatum, Jimmy Pope, Doug Almon and Randy Almon. Honorary pallbearers will be all Carrollton High School Athletes, Trainers, and Coaches. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Carrollton High School Athletic Booster Club or Carrollton High School Band Booster Club, 202 Trojan Dr., Carrollton, GA 30117, or Tanner Hospice, P. O. Box1136, Carrollton, GA 30112. Interment will be in the Carrollton City Cemetery.
