Lona Bassett

Lona Bassett, 69, of Ellisville, MS, died May 20, 2014, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, after a brief hospitalization with end-stage Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Lona had been diagnosed with CLL twelve years earlier. She is a native of the Pineville Community of Smith County and most recently resided near Ellisville in Jones County. Lona was a career English professor and a retiree of Jones County Junior College where she served as chairperson of the English Department for twenty years. Her total years of service at JCJC spanned approximately thirty years. She was loved and admired by the students she so much enjoyed and by the many friends she maintained within the English Department, throughout the JCJC community, in her home community of Pineville, and wherever she met people. Lona was preceded in death by her parents, Tarrell and Sue Bassett of Pineville. Family members who survive Lona include one sister and brother-in-law, Morrett and Danny Ellzey of Ellisville; two nephews, Rod Ellzey and Randy (Vette) Ellzey of Ellisville; three great-nieces, Lori Ellzey Dansby, Rachael Ellzey, and Johna Ellzey, all of Ellisville; one aunt, Mavis Read of Hattiesburg; and many cousins and relatives. Memorial services will be held Friday, May 23, 2014, at Leaf River Baptist Church in Pineville at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 22, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P. M. at Ellisville Funeral Home and then from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Leaf River Baptist Church prior to the funeral. Rev. Danny Dickerson, pastor of her home church, Leaf River Baptist, and Rev. Eddie Brady, a cousin, will officiate. Burial will be at the Leaf River Cemetery of Pineville. Pallbearers for the service will be Randy Ellzey, Rod Ellzey, Don Waites, Anthony Sorey, James Stevens, and Tommy Bishop. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Bassett, Joe Talley, and Lavoy Wardell. Memorials may be made to the T. L. Bassett Foundation of Jones County Junior College. Ellisville Funeral Home, Ellisville, MS, is in charge of the arrangements.
