Maxwell was born to Andrew and Hallie Smith Bass. His family moved to Rockwell City, Iowa, where they lived for 12 years. In 1925 they moved to Peoria where they lived above the family business, Bass Drug Store at the intersection of Main and University.
He was a reporter and feature writer for the Peoria Transcript from 1937 to 1941. In 1939 Max fell in love at first sight with Dorothy Risen; he proposed two weeks later. They were married in September 1940. She died in 2000.
During World War II he tried to enlist in the Marine Corps defense information service, but was rejected due to a dental problem. He said all he wanted to do was "write about the enemy, not bite them." The U.S. Army Air Corps, however, was willing to overlook a few cavities -- he served in both the Pacific and European theaters of operations.
He was employed at Caterpillar, Inc. for 36 years, retiring in 1977. While at Caterpillar he was instrumental in developing the company's worldwide employee publications program, including the corporate magazine, Caterpillar World which he edited.
He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Bass (Bruce Black); two grandsons, Alan Gentry and Seth Gentry; one step-grandson; Colin Black; one great granddaughter; and two nephews.
