James C. Griffin
James Cuthbert Griffin, farmer, living three miles northeast of Caseyville, is the son of Evirtt Turner, and Susan Ann (Bass) Griffin. His father was a farmer and a native of Southampton County, Va., but he went to Greensville County when quite young. Mr. Griffin?s mother was born and raised in Brunswick County Va., but married on April 11, 1837, and removed with her husband to Greensville County Va. This couple came West in 1844, when they had three children. They lived for short times in Cincinnati, Covington and Princeton. They finally moved to Union County in 1847. Thirteen children were born to them, but only four of them are now living. Mr. Evirtt Griffin died February 8, 1972, but his widow survives him, a very intelligent and hale old lady, living with her son James, the subject of this sketch. Mr. Griffin?s grandfather, Lemuel Griffin, married Margaret Turner. His grandfather, Benjamin Bass, married Eliza Burrow. He was sixty-two years old and she sixteen. He weighed two hundred and twenty-five pound and she weight ninety-five pounds. This apparently unequal match turnerd out to be a good one. Mr. Bass was a man of means, having made large sums in building and farming. He owned many negroes, and was a good provider, but he died, leaving his young widow with six children on her hands. The subject of this sketch, James C. Griffin, was born in Caseyville in 1848. He received about twelve years? training in the Caseyville schools during the winter months. He married Lizzie Fryar, daughter of Washington F. and Eveline (Cowan) Fryar, of Lindle Precinct, in 1868. He has seven children, one of whom is dead. The survivors are Annie Florence, Luella, Charley Edmund, George Evirtt, James Oda, John Louis. Mr. Griffin has always followed the occupation of farming in Union County. He has frequently been abroad however, and has a very fair fund of knowledge collected by observation of men and things. He farms 150 acres of Mr. William Rudy?s farm. He is a Republican in politics. He has been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for three years; his mother has belonged eighteen years, but his wife has been a member of the Christian Church for twenty years. He is also a member of the Knights of Honor.
