Veteran Teacher Of Portland Dies ? Herbert B. Augur Long at Jefferson High School
Herbert B. Augur, for many years a member of the Jefferson high school faculty, died Saturday night at Good Samaritan hospital after an illness of more than a year. Three weeks ago at his home, 2735 Northwest Raleigh street. Mr. Augur fell and broke a leg; it is thought that this accident hastened his death.
Mr. Augur was a member of well known New England family. He was born in Hartford, Conn., June 29, 1874, and after attending preparatory schools in his native city, entered Yale university and graduated with the class of 1897. The following year he came to Portland, having known a number of boys in Yale from this city. Soon after his arrival here, Mr. Augur began teaching at the Bishop Scott academy, for years a famous preparatory school in this city.
He began teaching at Jefferson high school, whose principal over since its organization has been Dr. Hopkins Jenkins, whom Mr. Augur first met at Yale, in 1909 and continued there until illness forced him to give up his classwork in 1937.
In 1990, Mr. Augur married Miss Emilie Thomas of San Antonio, Tex., who survives.
The teacher was a member of the Willamette lodge, No. 2 A.F.&A.M.; he was also a 32d degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Lang Syne society.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 P.M. at J. P. Finley & Son, 432 Southwest Montgomery street. Interment will be at Riverview cemetery.
