Henry V. Bass
Many of the most prosperous men of Lawrence County devoting themselves to farming and stock-raising, for both occupations can be very profitably prosecuted in this locality. Climatic condition and soil both tend to make Lawrence County a very desirable farming community. Among those who have proved this to their own satisfaction is Henry V. Bass, Sec. 14, Lukin Twp., who was born in Wabash County, Illinois, Feb. 19, 1831, a son of John L. Bass, now deceased. John L. Bass was one of the pioneers of Lukin Twp., but was born in Wilson Co., Tenn. in 1805 of French descent. His father was Ezekiel Bass a native of South Carolina and a slave owner, who moved from that state to Tenn. Ezekiel Bass married hi his native state Sarah Vinson who was a half-breed Indian. His death occurred in Tenn. when he was 96 years old; one of his brothers lived to be 100 years, 10 months and 9 days.
John L. Bass was reared in Tenn., where he married Elizabeth McLamore, a native of Virginia, but of Irish descent. After the birth of their first child, Mr. Bass moved to Illinois and remained in Wabash County a year. He participated in the Black Hawk War and was a man of considerable bravery. In the fall of 1813 he came to Lawrence County and located in Lukin Twp. where he bought 160 acres of land from the government at $1.25 an acre, half of which was timber and half prairie. He cleared and placed his land under cultivation. On his land he built a log house in which he lived until 1856. He then built a frame house where he lived until his death at the age of 74 years. He and his wife had children as follows: Lucy H., Henry, Rachel, Burrell, Ezekiel, Elizabeth, Mary, Jake, John and William, all born in Lukin Twp. but the eldest. John Bass was a Democrat, a member of the Baptist Church, and for 15 or 20 years a local preacher. The early educational advantages of Henry V. Bass were few, but he attended a log school and worked hard upon the farm. When he became of age he left home. His first marriage occurred in 1852 to Martha Ann Worstell, born in Ohio, a daughter of William Worstell, a pioneer of the County. They had the following family: William, Elizabeth, Marian, John, Lucy, Hattie and Moses. In 1868 Mrs. Bass died. On August 13, 1869, he married Louisa Moore who was born in Lukin Twp., a daughter of Edward Moore, who was born in Tenn. and a soldier of the Black Hawk War. They had nine children: Edward T., Jacob G., Ollie A., Charles F., Louisiana, Alfred F., Henry V., Joseph F. and Elijah E., the last three deceased. Mr. Bass moved to his present farm in 1858 and made it a valuable property. In 1862 he enlisted in Company I, One Hundred and Thirtieth Ill. Volunteers Infantry, serving three years and four months, participating in the battles of Champion Hill, Vicksburg, Jackson, Carrion Crow, Cross Roads, Mobile and others, but in consequence of an accident he was disabled. Returning from the War he farmed on this present farm of 80 acres. He has always been a Democrat, and for the past eight years has held the office of constable. He is a member of the GAR and is one of the best known and most thoroughly liked men in his locality, deserving all of the success that has been his.
