Bassett Funeral is Held Here Thanksgiving
Samuel Alexander Bassett's funeral was held Thanksgiving, with Barrett's Funeral home in charge of arrangements.
Active pallbearers included Messrs. James Cooley, James Cagle, Porter Gaddie, Archie Kemp, J. A. Hodges and Lloyd Sargent. Honarary Pallbearers were Clifton Everett, Robert Johnson, Don Henry, E. A. Hammond, Will Greer, Gene Blakemore, Cavity Tombs, J. b. Sanders, E. C. Clark, John Harper, John Hagan, and Allie Hammond of Union City.
Those attending the rites from a distance were Mr. And Mrs. Ray Andrews, of Cleveland, Ohio, Cpl. Ray Austin, of Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, Thomas E. Douglas, of Memphis, Mr. And Mrs. Charlie Robinson, Rev. A. B. Henson, and Mrs. Bulah Wyrk, of Paris, Tenn., Mr. And Mrs. Tom vinson, Allie Hammonds, Mrs. Z. T. Roper, and Jimmie Johnson of Union city, Tn., Mr. And Mrs. Frank Provow, and son, Joe Frank, of Tiptonville, Tn., and Mr. And Mrs. Sam Douglas, of Freemont, Tn.
Mr. Bassett died at his home on 315 Tennessee St., Hickman, Ky, at 11:15 a.m., as the result of a heart attack, suffered the previous day. He was 83 years, eight months, and 14 days old.
Son of Jeremiah Bassett and Elizabeth Johnson Bassett, he was born in New Madrid, Mo., and was the last surviving member of a large family.
He had spent several years as a farmer and also had been in the mercantile business, which he knew from the viewpoints of both owner and clerk; as applied to both groceries and clothing. Mr. Bassett had lived at Popular Grove and Union City, before coming to Hickman but wherever he lived he always identified himself with the better citizens of the community. He was especially faithful to the Baptist Church, of which he had been a life long member, having served as Sunday School Superintendent at both Poplar Grove and Hickman. He had also served as teacher of the Men's Bible Class at First Baptist Church for a number of years.
He was a devoted husband and a kind and generous father to six orphans whom he and Mrs. Bassett helped rear. Mr. Bassett was a likable neighbor and friend....
