Linus Bassett Dies in Italy, Mishap Victim
First Lt. Linus J. Bassett, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Linus M. Bassett, 300 N. Genesee, was killed in an automobile accident, Mother’s Day, May 11, in Italy, where he was stationed with the Army occupation forces.
The parents were informed of the tragedy in a telegram from the War Department. The wire reported none of the details but stated a letter would follow. Yesterday they received a cablegram from Lieutenant Bassett’s bride of 11 months, who accompanied him to Italy, saying she was returning by plane with the body.
Lieutenant Bassett had served two years overseas during the war, returning early in 1946 and re-enlisting in the occupation forces. He first was mobilized Jan. 6, 1941, in Troop A., 101st Cavalry. He was graduated form Officers Training School July 2, 1943, at Ft. Benning, Ga., and served two years in Texas with the 801st Tank Destroyer Battalion.
He went overseas in December, 1944, and served two years in Italy. He returned to the United States early in 1946 and received his honorable discharge. He married the former Geraldine Stone June 9, 1946, in Baltimore. The couple went overseas in October, shortly after Lieutenant Bassett re-enlisted, and were living in Slatlana, Italy.
Lieutenant Bassett was born in Utica Jan. 18, 1921, son of Linus and Francis Cheeseman Bassett. He attended St. Francis de Sales School. He was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Charles H. Adrean DSC Post 368, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Utica Pup Tent, Military Order of Cooties.
Besides his wife and parents Lt. Bassett leaves a brother, William A. Bassett; a sister, Mrs. John Zimmerman; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Bassett; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Minnie Cheeseman; two nephews, and several aunts and uncles, all of Utica.
